February 2010 - Trek to Buckland Flats
Our winter campout this year for scouts we decided to head up to Buckland flats. The inital plan was to do snowshoeing but after researching pricing we realized that this may be slightly more expensive than we can afford this year for scouts, so we opted for a good old fashioned car campout in the mountains, in the snow.
Our adventure started out at 4:00 at the scout room. [Rest of adventure to be posted here with pics later]
No commentsYM/YW Trek Genealogical Combined outing
For January combined activity we went to the genealogical library to research the handcart companies and get access to some great resources.
One of the cool websites we went to was lds.org. Steps to navigate below:
Go to http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/content/0,15757,4079-1-2134,00.html
Click on “Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel (1847 – 1868)”
This will include names of each pioneer company that crossed the plains, names of each pioneer who crossed the plains, ages of each pioneer, whether or not they survived or died on the trail, excerpts from diaries, journals, etc. (this was the coolest part).
Enjoy!
Klondike Derby Campout
We decided to head up to the district camp they were having this year up past Heber City. It was the Klondike derby camp out. On Friday night they had two athletes from the Y (cross country and football) come up and talk to us. It took us a while but we got all of our gear up to our cabins and then went to bed. It actually wasn’t that cold at all during the night. We woke up about 7:30ish and packed our stuff up and headed down to breakfast. After breakfast we participated in a bunch of the games and the Klondike race.
Of these two events I would like to point out 2 of them specifically. During one of them the boys had to try and save the life of an individual who had fallen through the ice in a river or lake. They eventually got the boy out of the fictitious water and weren’t 100% sure what to do. Our team got docked points because the leaders kept yelling out what to do. After finally getting the injured boy on a sling (after falling a few times) the camp coordinator stopped them and asked them a few more questions about winter survival and then we were on our way. On the way out from that event I asked the boys what they learned from that experience. Simon responded that if any scout from our troop falls in the water that they would probably die. I about died laughing. Fun experience for the boys though.
The next event is the Klondike race itself. Aaron Zulo was extremely excited to participate, and being the competitor that he was he took the pushing position. They did the race in about 5 or 6 different heats and we were the 3rd or 4th. Our Troop came in 2nd place in our heat and at the time was about 4th overall. As the last few heats came in we slowly got bumped down, but had fun nonetheless.
Strawberry Reservoir - Trout Creek
Info and pics coming soon…
Wow, I guess if you define “soon” as in a couple of months, then I’m right on target for reaching that goal. Without further delay, here is a recap of our wonderful Trout Creek scout camp event.
Jeremy and Crew headed up to Strawberry earlier in the day to go fishing and catch some crawdads. Our goal on this trip was to “Eat what we caught”. The downside to this is that we didn’t catch any fish, so it was crawdad central for dinner….yummy!!!!!! In all actuality they weren’t that bad, they are like your rocky mountain lobsters, just a little dirtier I think.
Jeff seemed to thoroughly enjoy them as he used BUCK the hunting knife to dissect them to pieces and devour them. Some of the other boys wouldn’t really touch them, so they were a little hungry.
The next day we went out on the lake with the conoes (put out at Trout Creek). The boys had a blast. We canoed out to an island and fished for a bit. After about 4 hours on the lake, nobody had caught anything. Right before leaving the island, Chad HIlton caught one and thought it was a trout. (This is where my lack of fishing experience didn’t help out all that much). It turns out that it was a chub or something, but hey - it was a fish nonetheless.
On our canoe back to the mainland we had some good water fights and ended up with some water filled canoes. We emptied the canoes out, got the boys semi-dry and headed back home. Oh what fun! Check out the pics.
No commentsBackpacking - Holbrook Canyon
To work on a few of our merit badges (backpacking, camping, hiking etc.) we wanted to take the boys on a nice little backpacking adventure. We took them up Holbrook canyon (located in Bountiful) a few miles to a nice secluded little camp spot on 6/21 and 6/22.
I don’t recall the exact time we started but I think it took us about 50 minutes to get to our campspot, and then a few hours to try and get a fire started :). After setting up camp (Brother Hilton made himself a nice little bed with rope, James H. packed in his tent and the others brought tarps to sleep on) we worked with the boys to start a fire with flint and steel and eventually got one going. We boiled some water for our backpacking dinners and had a blast just sitting around the fire chatting.
The next morning we boiled some water and ate our breakfast. Cleaned up camp and hiked back out. It was a beautiful weekend for a campout.
Fathers and Sons

A great little outing down at the ball diamonds. For the Aaronic Priesthood commemoration we had a short video and then a talk by Brother Smith after some tastey burgers/hotdogs and dutch oven. The following morning Brother Takos and Barber came down and cooked some wonderful pancakes. Their bantering back and forth was almost better than the pancakes. Here are a few pics of the excitement.

Scout-O-Rama
We all had a chance to sit in the pilot’s seat of this blackhawk helicopter. This helicopter was used in Iraq and had several bullet holes in it from the action it had seen. The guys also sat in the gunner’s seat where the person laying down cover fire for our troops would have been.

in March we headed out passed Tooele for a fun little scout outing. We took up some guns for the boys to practice their marksmanship and work on their rifle shooting. It was fun times. I think the boys had a fun time. Some pics of the excitement!
Troop 446 - hoo-rah!
This site will hopefully provide for a location where the collection of pictures, information about events and projects that are worked on may be documented and viewed by all interested.
